The science behind....

dot·on ear seeds are a non-invasive form of auricular therapy, also known as auriculotherapy that does not penetrate the skin. It involves stimulating specific points on the ear to address a broad array of symptoms and most importantly, the underlying conditions. The basis for this is that the ear is a microsystem of the entire body, with each part of the ear corresponding to a specific organ or area. By stimulating these points on the ear, the corresponding body part can be inflcuenced to promote healing.

Let's delve into the research and evidence to find out about how this actually works.

Evidence from Research Studies

A 2013 study looked at the effectiveness of auricular point acupressure for chronic lower back pain and found a 70% improvement in pain intensity from baseline after a 4-week auricular acupressure with maintenance of improvement at 1-month followup.

A 2015 study on the effect of ear acupressure looked at the effect of using ear acupressure for patients with hypertension.  The experimental group received ear acupressure over 10 weeks while the control group received regular care. Researchers found that those who received auricular acupressure reported a significant improvement in their mental health, body pain, and quality of life.

A 2015 study looked at the effect of ear therapy in a small group of university students with high anxiety levels and suffering from TMP (temporomandibular disorder).   It found that auricular therapy helped to reduce anxiety and EMG activity during temporal muscle contraction, leading to a pain reduction.

Another 2015 study published in Pain Management Nursing looked at the effect of ear acupressure as an adjunct analgesic treatment for cancer patients. By the end of the 7-day study, patients reported reduced pain intensity. Most imprtantly, the use of pain medication was reduced during the ear acupressure treatment.

Researchers at the University of Leeds found that stimulating the outer ear for 15 minutes a day for two weeks could reduce the “fight or flight” response in volunteers, as well as significantly improving sleep, mood and autonomic balance compared to the placebo group.

In summary; there are numerous studies supporting the evidence for the health benefits of ear acupressure, the technique used by dot·on, for different conditions.
